ABOUT DR.MANI's NON-PROFIT WORK
In 1997, it was a dream. In 2001, it was a plan. And in 2005, it had become real.
The Dr.Mani Children Heart Foundation has since raised a little over $100,000 and sponsored heart operations for 23 children from underprivileged families born with congenital heart defects.
This is the brainchild of heart surgeon and social entrepreneur Dr.Mani Sivasubramanian, who with his wife founded the organization to focus a vague idea he started out with - to make high-quality heart health care accessible and affordable to every Indian child.
2500 children die every day from congenital heart defects. 1 in 4 of them lives in India. With early detection and treatment, almost all of them will be completely cured.
They will return to normal, healthy, productive lives. Be active members of their community and society. Become parents, even grand-parents.
Sadly, of the thousands of children born every year in India with congenital heart defects, most will not receive any treatment... because they cannot afford the steep cost of heart healthcare.
Heart surgery is expensive. Heart birth defects are often fatal without it. Many patients from poor families cannot afford the cost of treatment. So Dr.Mani decided to try and help sponsor the operations.
The problem was how to do it.
Though not as expensive as in the U.S., each operation still costs $2,500 to $3,000. Dr.Mani decided to go about it in 2 ways - seeking donations and making contributions from his growing Internet marketing business.
As his business expanded and grew, the contribution towards funding congenital heart surgery went up too. In 2006, the contribution from sales profits to the Foundation was a little over $25,000. This figure has been growing steadily every year.
His clients helped by spreading the word to his target audience (other small and home business owners) about Dr.Mani's business optimization products and services - making more people aware about them, increasing sales, and indirectly raising funds to help the 'heart kids'.
The other source of funding for the Dr.Mani Children Heart Foundation is through charitable donations made by a donor base of around 600 supporters. Each donor has given between $5 and $15,000. Many are repeat donations, with a modest contribution made every month or year.
To spur enthusiasm and spread awareness about the issue of congenital heart defects, Dr.Mani does an annual blogging marathon called the 'Heart Kids Blogathon'. This gets high visibility in media, through the blogosphere and in Dr.Mani's social network, bringing home the message to a collective audience that numbers millions.
Other similar activities designed to help create buzz and help raise money to save a child's life include the 'Heart Kids Tagathon', the CHD movie, the observation of February 14th every year as 'Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Day' and more.
In the words of Dr.Mani:
"I can - and do - handle the medical and emotional elements that surround Congenital Heart Defects. But alone, I can't help with the financial ones. That's why I need YOU. The children do."
Will YOU help Dr.Mani and the 'heart kids'?
